Hal Wasson won a state championship as head coach at Southlake Carroll before a chaotic split.
Hal Wasson has announced that he is retiring as Corsicana football coach and Corsicana ISD athletic director at the end of this school year, the school district p`1osted on its website.
After much prayer and reflection, I feel that this is the right time to retire from this journey and focus on my family. “I don’t want to miss any of my three grandchildren playing basketball, baseball, or football,” Wasson said in a statement.
Hal Wasson Corsicana, 65, was the head coach for three seasons, averaging a record 17-14, including 6-4 last season. Her only playoff appearance in those three years came in 2019 when Corsicana lost in the first round.
Hal Wasson began his coaching career in 1980. Prior to Corsicana, he was the head coach of Italy, San Saba, Pittsburgh, Cairns, Mexico, Liberty Hill, Keller Fossil Ridge, and Southlake Carroll.
It has been an incredible run. The relationship with your players, the relationship with your coaches, that’s what I’m going to miss the most, “Wasson said.
I tell everyone that I am retiring in my prime. I’ll take a few months and see what the good Lord opens next. It may not be anything. It can just sit around and chase grandchildren.
This was Wasson’s second term at Corsicana. He was an assistant coach from 1983 to 1986.
Coach Wasson was and always will be a coach and a leader, “Corsicana ISD Superintendent Diane Frost said in a statement.” He left a legacy across the state of Texas. A football coach with more than three wins and a person of his character who is fully committed to the development of the district program and athletes.
Wasson was head coach of Southlake Carroll for 11 years, posting 121-25 records and winning a state championship in 2011. But he resigned from Southlake Carroll in 2018 after accepting 165,300 purchases following an investigation by the coach into possible wrongdoing.
According to documents obtained by The Dallas Morning News, an investigation into the Carol football program found money from a fundraiser, including minor UIL violations and tensions between Wasson and former athletics director Darren Alman. No charges were deemed sufficient to dismiss Wasson, but he was placed on administrative leave, and his purchase was stopped.
After Carroll left, Wasson Irving took over as executive director of ISD’s Athletics. He was there for nine months before taking the job of head coaching at Corsicana.
